We made it to the hospital with only one or two ‘Where the hell did you learn to drive?’ moments. Seriously, what was it with people thinking they were on the Autobahn the second they got behind the wheel of a sport’s car?

We quickly made our way to the surgical waiting room where Doyle ran over to be wrapped in his father’s arms.

Mr. Weston, an older version of his son, with short graying hair, looked at me. “Thanks for driving him, Jed.”

I shrugged. It wasn’t a big thing. Of course, I wouldn’t leave Doyle on his own during a time like this.

Doyle pulled back from his dad. “Have you called Papa, yet?”

“Yeah, he’s flying in. His plane is supposed to land in two hours,” Mr. Weston explained when I looked at him curiously. “He was in Vegas with a group of seniors from his church.”

I grinned. “That sounds like a church I might like.”

“Well, he did say that their agreement was, ‘what happens in Vegas never reaches the pastor’s ears’.” He grinned weakly at the joke. “He’s going to catch a cab as soon as he gets in.”

“I can go get him. No need to pay for a cab.”

“Thank you, Jed, but he’s going straight to the cab line when he gets in. His friends are bringing his bags back for him so he won’t have to mess with them.” Mr. Weston’s eyes darkened with fear as he tilted his head at the son he still had in his arms.

I swallowed against the lump in my throat. He wanted me here for Doyle if the worst happened. I nodded at him as I put my hand on Doyle’s back. Yeah, I’d be here for the both of them, while praying to God that I wouldn’t be needed like that.

We settled down for the wait. Mrs. Weston’s car had been T-boned by someone who had run a red light. After being brought to the trauma center, she’d quickly been rushed up to surgery to stop internal bleeding and repair any damage to her organs that had occurred. Plus, her left arm and leg were so badly broken that she was going to need pins to hold them together. A doctor came out to update us to say they had the bleeding under control, and they thought they’d been able to save her kidney. She was in good enough shape that they had brought another surgeon in to do the pins. But, it was going to be a long process while they put her shattered bones back together. I was relieved when we’d been able to give Doyle’s papa that much good news on his arrival. His grandfather looked his age for the first time since I’d met him.

When he’d arrived, I’d made sure he was comfortable and had everything he needed before settling back in next to Doyle. Within fifteen minutes of sitting back down, Doyle had fallen asleep and curled into me. I carefully shifted until I could pull him even closer, my arm outright cuddling him.
